What’s better than a book recommendation from people in your circle who share similar tastes and interests?

I always have a few books going. After recently moderating a discussion on artistic activism with Jan Husták from Direct Action Theatre, Diana Burkot of Pussy Riot, and filmmaker Thomas Østbye at Østfold International Theatre in Fredriskstad, I am on an “artivist” kick.

I am currently reading Riot Days by Maria Alyokhina, one of the artists sent to prison for her part in the now iconic Pussy Riot performance inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

The performance Punk Prayer – Mother of God, Chase Putin Away! was a critique of the Orthodox Church’s support for Putin in the lead-up to Russia’s presidential election in 2012. The book is a prison memoir, a compelling inside look into the makings of artistic activism, and a stark reminder of the precariousness of freedom and democracy and the cost many pay for speaking out against oppression.

If you’re curious about this moment in Russian history, I can recommend the documentary film Winter, Go Away which chronicles the hopeful waves of activism before the 2012 election, including Pussy Riot’s performance.
